My sister, whose husband died unexpectedly in September, fell on an icy sidewalk earlier this week and broke her arm.

The lesson being: If someone you love dies, don't walk on icy sidewalks. No, I've got it: If someone you love dies, don't go outside. Wait: If something bad happens, give up. Sorry to make somewhat light of this, but that's exactly what I do when something bad happens.
Sometimes it does seem that bad luck just hangs around. Wish your sis a very speedy recovery. I think illness or injury seems worse during the holiday season when we kind of expect the best.
