Geographic Trivia Time

Dalhart is a city in the far northwest corner of the Texas Panhandle. It is the county seat of Dallam County although about half of the town is in Hartley County. (Contrary to popular belief, the town was never the county seats for both counties.)

Dalhart is located closer to six other state capitals than to Austin:
  • 491 miles from Austin
  • 201 miles from Santa Fe, New Mexico
  • 281 miles from Oklahoma City
  • 289 miles from Denver, Colorado
  • 375 miles from Cheyenne, Wyoming
  • 434 miles from Topeka, Kansas
  • 458 miles from Lincoln, Nebraska

Oh my goodness, Jim! Dalhart is my hometown!

I lived in Dallam county, and went to high school in Hartley county.

Another odd thing about Hartley county is that the county seat is actually not the town of Hartley, which would be expected. Channing is actually the county seat.

And, I've been to all but one of the state capitals you listed. The one I haven't been to is Cheyenne. However, Stan and I plan to drive through there when we make our big trip from Portland back home with the remainder of his things.

That can happen in a State as large as Texas.
