The little thing above is proposed as a punctuation mark to indicate sarcasm. As in:
We have enough trouble with language and writing a proper sentence as it is. Let's not add any MORE confusion. Then I'll have to get back on my soap box and all that will accomplish is me spending more time in timeout.
